Opponents said the law had created confusion about whether teachers could identity themselves as LGBTQ+ or if they even could have rainbow stickers in classrooms. Other states used the Florida law as a template to pass prohibitions on classroom instruction on gender identity or sexual orientation. Under the terms of the settlement, the Florida Board of Education will send instructions to every school district saying the Florida law doesn't prohibit discussing LGBTQ+ people, nor prevent anti-bullying rules on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity or disallow Gay-Straight Alliance groups. It barred instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through the third grade, and it was expanded to all grades last year. In some cases, books dealing with LGBTQ+ topics were removed from classrooms and lines mentioning sexual orientation were excised from school musicals.

Donald Trump has suggested the mysterious red marks on his hands that sparked online speculation last month may have been AI-generated. Multiple photos showed him waving, with small red marks visible on his right hand. They did not appear to have been there the previous evening, based on photos taken in Atkinson, New Hampshire. Nonetheless, it was notable at Sunday's rally in New Hampshire to see Trump praise DeSantis without calling him “DeSantimonious” or “DeSanctus,” putting an end to perhaps the most bitter rivalry of Republicans' 2024 campaign. “It’s clear to me that a majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance,” DeSantis said, offering matter-of-fact analysis through a forced smile without adding plaudits for Trump. To try to understand his enduring appeal, Reuters spoke to five Trump supporters in five general election battleground states: Nevada, Georgia, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. Trump currently leads Democratic President Joe Biden in several swing state general election polls, suggesting he will be highly competitive in a likely re-match next November. None are full-blown "election deniers" backing Trump's false claims that he, and not Biden, won the 2020 election. The second issue that swung Ruiz back behind Trump was the multiple criminal charges against him. Johnson likes Trump's tough stance on migration, and believes Trump will slow the crossings and deport as many migrants as feasibly possible.

The endorsement is unlikely to change the fundamental dynamics of the Iowa race, which Trump currently dominates. Some 81% of likely participants in the state's Republican caucuses approve of her, according to an August poll conducted by the Des Moines Register newspaper. Much like DeSantis, Reynolds has leaned into "culture war" issues as governor. DeSantis and Haley Spar Over Israel, Refugees

GOP presidential contenders have rushed to stand with Israel, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is trying to reinforce that stance by attacking a rival candidate, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. DeSantis has broadly described people living in Gaza as antisemites and said he would refuse to accept any refugees into the U.S. Haley, when on CNN Sunday asked about DeSantis's remarks, said, "America has always been sympathetic to the fact that you can separate civilians from terrorists.” On Tuesday, a group supporting DeSantis launched a TV ad accusing Haley of trying to be "politically correct." Haley, who has climbed in polls, shot back that a "desperate" DeSantis is lying about her record and said she opposes taking in refugees from Gaza.

The sharp increase, notably around San Diego, California, and the Texas border towns of El Paso and Eagle Pass, follows an earlier lull in unauthorized border crossings following a new asylum policy imposed by Democratic President Joe Biden's administration to discourage such activity. Musk, a native of South Africa, noted his own status as an "immigrant to the United States" and called himself "extremely pro-immigrant." In the 4-minute video clip, he introduced U.S. Representative Tony Gonzales, a Republican from Texas whose district spans more than 800 miles of the border, who welcomed Musk and said people along the Texas border "really feel abandoned." DeSantis' immigration crackdown is convincing some undocumented workers to stay out of Florida. Workers told the New York Times that the risk of deportation is just too high to help clean up after Hurricane Idalia. DeSantis's law, signed in May, made it much more difficult for migrant workers to live and work in Florida. That law is now affecting hurricane recovery efforts across the state, the New York Times reported. REUTERS/Cheney Orr/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Sept 2 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden heads to Florida on Saturday to survey damage caused by Hurricane Idalia and comfort people affected by the storm, but he will not be meeting Ron DeSantis, the state's Republican governor and a potential presidential rival. DeSantis, 44, is running for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination to oust Biden from the White House but trails former President Donald Trump in polls. Biden and DeSantis have spoken regularly through the week about the storm, which pummeled Florida's Big Bend region with Category 3 winds of nearly 125 mph (200 kph). DeSantis has been a sharp critic of Biden, and the two have clashed over COVID-19 vaccines, abortion and LGBT rights. DeSantis may not want to be photographed with Biden overlooking storm damage now as the Republican presidential primary race intensifies.

The ruling allows the oversight district to pursue its case that seeks to void "backroom deals" favorable to Disney that were struck with a prior district board earlier this year. A Disney spokesperson said the decision "has no bearing" on the federal lawsuit seeking to "vindicate Disney's constitutional rights." "We are fully confident Disney will prevail in both the federal and state cases," the spokesperson said in an email. The skirmish began last year after Disney criticized a Florida law banning classroom discussion of sexuality and gender identity with younger children. DeSantis rallied lawmakers to pass bills that reconstituted the district as the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District and transferred power over the board to the governor from Disney.
